Apple’s latest update, iOS 26, brings a handy fix for AirPods users frustrated by automatic audio switching. This feature, introduced in iOS 14, lets AirPods switch between Apple devices like your iPhone, iPad, or Mac based on what you’re using. While convenient, it can be disruptive if audio switches unexpectedly, like when you grab your phone while watching a video on your iPad.
With iOS 26, you can now control this behavior through a new setting.
Go to the Settings app, find the AirPods section, and choose to keep audio on your current device, even if another device, like a car or speaker, tries to connect. This gives you more control over your listening experience, preventing unwanted interruptions.
The update also includes other AirPods improvements, like manual firmware updates and studio-quality audio recording for podcasts or videos.
These features are available in the iOS 26 developer beta now and will roll out to everyone this fall. Apple announced these changes at WWDC 2025, alongside a redesigned “Liquid Glass†look for iOS, iPadOS, and macOS.
This small but meaningful tweak shows Apple’s focus on making its devices work better for you, especially if you’ve ever been annoyed by your AirPods switching at the wrong time.
