Ukraine’s leader stresses US action to push Russia toward peace
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy emphasized that strong U.S. leadership is crucial to pressuring Russia into ending its war against Ukraine, now in its fourth year. Speaking before a prisoner swap with Russia, Zelenskiy said America’s firm stance could force Russian President Vladimir Putin to negotiate a ceasefire. He believes that clear U.S. steps, like tougher sanctions on Russia’s banks and shadow fleet, would weaken Putin’s ability to fund his military.

Zelenskiy noted that European allies are hesitant to fully back Ukraine without solid U.S. support. He hopes to meet U.S. President Donald Trump at the upcoming G7 meeting in Canada to discuss these issues. “Only Trump might stop Putin,” Zelenskiy said, highlighting the need for financial pressure to limit Russia’s war efforts. Without U.S. action, he warned, Ukraine faces a tough road ahead.

The recent prisoner exchange, involving Ukrainian soldiers and border guards held since 2022, was a small step forward from talks in Turkey. However, Zelenskiy stressed that broader progress depends on America’s resolve. He urged the U.S. to shift its approach from warm dialogue with Russia to a tougher stance, ensuring Putin feels the consequences of his actions. Strong sanctions and unwavering support for Ukraine’s army are vital, Zelenskiy added, to bring peace closer.
