Samsung’s response to 990 Pro SSDs using PCIe 4.0 instead of 5.0: Report

Posted on

Samsung officially released the Samsung 990 PRO PCIe 4.0 SSD, the official said that the 990 PRO fully balances the requirements of high speed, high energy efficiency, and high reliability, using 3D TLC (3bit) particles as well as the new self-developed master controller, the sequential read and write speeds are up to 7,450 MB/s and 6,900MB/s, respectively, and the random read and write speeds are up to 1,400K and 1,550K IOPS, respectively. Compared with the 980 PRO, its random read-write performance improved by 55%.

The Samsung 990 PRO series products use the PCIe 4.0 interface, and the general opinion in the industry is that this product will use the new PCIe standard PCI Express 5.0 that can increase the transmission speed, but in fact, Samsung Electronics still maintains the PCI Express 4.0 standard of the 990 Pro.

In this regard, Samsung Electronics explained, “This is not a product development or technical issue, but a judgment based on market conditions.” Samsung says the newly designed SSD controller has significantly improved energy efficiency, up to 50% higher than the 980 PRO. In addition, the 990 PRO adds a nickel coating on the controller and uses tabbed heatsinks on the hard drives to ensure stable cooling, while the 990 PRO (cooling version) will also provide an extra layer of heatsinks and support RGB lighting textures.

PCI Express 5.0 is a new standard published by the PCI-SIG in May 2019. It doubles the transfer rate again compared to 4.0, which can now transfer up to about 2 GB/s per lane with PCI Express 4.0, while Micron previously demonstrated that 5.0 solid-state sequential read and write can reach 10 GB/s.

Moreover, Samsung 990 PRO will be released globally in November this year. The 1TB model is $179, the 2TB version is $309, and the model with a heat sink is $20 more expensive, a 4TB model will also be launched next year.
