Apple might be removing SIM card slot from some iPhone 14 models

According to the latest report, Apple has internally discussed the idea of launching some iPhones without SIM card slots by next year. In his latest Power On newsletter, Gurman said the move will be part of Apple’s push for eSIM adoption.

Gurman said the SIM card slot may be removed on some iPhone 14 models, and Apple is expected to announce the news in three days, although he said the change may not happen until next year’s iPhone 15.

“Apple will give the eSIM a bigger push this time around, as operators prepare to steer users towards using a digital embedded SIM card instead of a physical card. In fact, Apple has already considered removing the physical SIM entirely for some models starting this year or next year.”

Moreover, eSIM is a digital SIM card that allows users to activate a cellular number provided by an operator without having to use a physical nano-SIM card. The availability of eSIM is expanding rapidly, but the technology is not available in all countries, so some iPhone models with SIM card slots will still be available in the interim.

Furthermore, iPhones in many countries do not currently support eSIM. In Hong Kong and Macau, iPhone 13 mini, iPhone 12 mini, iPhone SE (2nd and 3rd generation), and iPhone XS support eSIM.

Apple is expected to release the iPhone 14 / Pro series at a special event on September 8th. Other products that may be released include the Apple Watch Series 8, the new Apple Watch SE, the Apple Watch Pro, and the new AirPods Pro.
